This charming, impressionistic pastoral scene features a stately, multi-story country manor set deeply within an enclave of mature, leafy trees. The pale-faced home is detailed with dormer windows and sturdy brick-red chimneys that contrast softly with the surrounding environment, where the descriptions of the hues contain and not exact the deep forest greens, light meadow grasses, and earthy shadows. In the heavily shaded foreground, the dark silhouettes of three cows—two standing together and one resting peacefully on a dirt path—add a serene, idyllic quality to the rural landscape.

The artwork is clearly signed “M. Barnard” in the lower right corner, gently correcting the M. Bernard attribution and pointing toward the active period of British/Scottish artist Mary B. Barnard. The reverse side of the panel preserves an original historic trade label from “John Gibson,” a carver, gilder, and picture restorer located at 112 Bothwell Street in Glasgow, firmly anchoring the painting to its early 20th-century Scottish origins.
