American Empire Flame Mahogany Tilt Top Table

USD $ 3,500.00

Date: Circa 1830–1845
Medium: Flame Mahogany and Mahogany Veneers

This exceptional tilt-top table is a premier example of the American Empire style, a period of furniture design that favored bold silhouettes and the dramatic use of high-quality imported timbers. The tabletop is characterized by exquisite “flame” mahogany veneers, prized for their symmetrical, fiery grain patterns that create a sense of movement across the expansive surface. Designed for versatility in high-society nineteenth-century homes, the “tilt-top” mechanism allowed the table to be stored vertically against a wall when not in use, showcasing its spectacular woodwork as a decorative panel.

The table’s architecture is anchored by a massive, bulbous turned pedestal that descends into a robust four-legged base. Each leg is meticulously hand-carved with scrolling acanthus leaves—a signature motif of the Empire period, terminating in powerful, stylized animal-paw feet. This combination of “Classical” Greco-Roman inspiration and heavy, masculine proportions defines the aesthetic popularized by legendary makers like Duncan Phyfe and Charles-Honoré Lannuier. Preserved in remarkable condition, the deep, lustrous patina highlights the natural chatoyancy of the mahogany, making it a sophisticated centerpiece for a formal dining room or a curated entryway.
