This monumental Victorian architectural window is a premier example of late 19th-century residential glasswork, likely originally commissioned as a focal point for a grand stair landing or foyer. The design features a dramatic “sunburst” or “spiderweb” motif, with intricate radial leadwork emanating from a central diamond-shaped medallion of milky white opalescent glass. The primary body of the window is composed of a rich amber “hammered” cathedral glass, specifically chosen for its ability to broadcast a warm, golden glow while maintaining privacy. A striking feature of this composition is the inclusion of over 30 faceted white glass jewels (rondels) set at the intersections of the radial lines, which were designed to catch the sunlight and create rhythmic, prismatic light effects throughout a room’s interior.

The technical complexity of this piece is highlighted by the delicate scalloped (fan-shaped) panes that border the perimeter, softening the transition between the geometric sunburst and the outer rectangular frame. The window remains housed in its original heavy-timber wood sash, which shows the authentic wear and patina of over a century of use. Due to its significant size (nearly five feet in height), the construction includes visible horizontal reinforcement bars (re-bars), a necessary engineering element to prevent the lead from “slumping” or bowing under the glass’s weight. This window represents the height of the Victorian “jewel box” aesthetic, where geometry and colored light were used to transform a home into a theatrical and spiritual space.
