Viennese Wall Clock

USD $ 1,000.00

Date: Circa 1890
Dimensions: 33″ H x 10″ W

This striking Viennese wall clock, classically known as a “Vienna Regulator,” is a masterpiece of late 19th-century European horology. Encased in a slender, architectural walnut frame, the piece exemplifies the “Alt-Deutsch” (Old German) style, characterized by its fluted pilasters, turned finials, and an elegant arched pediment. Its tall, glazed door and side panels provide a curated view of the internal mechanics, making it as much a scientific instrument as a decorative focal point.

The clock features a pristine two-part porcelain dial with traditional Roman numerals and a matching porcelain-insert pendulum. Notably, the pendulum is marked with the letters “R” and “A,” standing for Retard and Advance (Slower and Faster). This functional detail allowed the owner to regulate the timekeeping by adjusting the nut at the base of the pendulum to raise or lower the bob. Unlike mass-produced modern versions, this antique regulator was designed to be a “master clock” for the home, providing a standard of accuracy that remains a hallmark of Viennese craftsmanship.
