This magnificent Victorian-era cylinder music box is a masterwork of Swiss mechanical engineering and decorative cabinetry, produced by the prestigious firm of Samuel Troll Fils in Geneva. The case is constructed from rich, deep-toned rosewood and burl walnut veneers, featuring a central lid panel adorned with intricate marquetry inlay depicting a stylized shell and scrolling foliate motifs in satinwood and boxwood. The lid is further enhanced by delicate string inlays and a contrasting black ebonized border, which frames the decorative work and adds a sense of architectural structure to the piece.

Inside the lid, a prominent engraved brass nameplate identifies the maker as “Samuel Troll Fils, Geneva,” a name synonymous with high-quality musical movements during the golden age of Swiss music boxes. The interior features a large brass cylinder movement protected by an original glass dust cover, allowing the viewer to observe the intricate mechanical interplay of the pins and the tuned steel comb. To the right of the movement, the box retains its original brass control levers for “Change/Repeat” and “Stop/Play,” each clearly marked with its designated function.
