Victorian Marble-Top Mahogany Console Table
USD $ 2,800.00
Date: Mid-to-Late 19th Century (c. 1860–1880, Classical Revival / Victorian Period)
Medium: Carved solid mahogany and mahogany veneers with white veined marble top
This impressive Victorian console or pier table features a serpentine-contoured white marble top set above a shaped mahogany apron. The white marble surface displays subtle gray veining and soft age-appropriate toning, cut to conform precisely to the distinctive flared ends and central swell of the table’s frame. The flame mahogany apron is supported by carved front scroll legs embellished with acanthus leaf details, side volutes, and carved scroll feet resting on plinths, anchored at the rear by straight rectangular pilasters. The rich mahogany wood tone contains natural warm reddish-brown and dark auburn shades that complement the cool stone top.
Designed to sit flat against an entryway wall or between large parlor windows, pier tables served as grand display furniture in late 19th-century homes. The combination of a heavy marble slab and carved mahogany architectural supports reflects the enduring influence of the Classical Revival style popular throughout the American and British Victorian eras.
