This magnificent wall mirror is a premier example of the patriotic American Federal style, characterized by its bold classical architecture and nationalistic motifs.

The mirror is surmounted by a vigorously carved, three-dimensional American bald eagle with outspread wings, perched majestically upon a stylized, leaf-carved rocky plinth. Flanking the central eagle are two symmetrical, overflowing cornucopias (horns of plenty) resting on the upper shoulders of the frame. These cornucopias are intricately molded with traditional symbols of American agricultural wealth, including ears of maize (corn), bunches of grapes, pomegranates, and classical foliage.

The main body of the frame features a heart or shield-shaped aperture enveloped by fluted architectural side columns. These columns terminate in elegant scrolled acanthus leaf brackets at both the top and midsection. The base of the frame features a mirrored bottom scroll with central volutes. The mirror displays a rich, deep antique gold patina with beautiful, genuine craquelure and hairline cracks throughout the gesso under-layer, which highlights the hand-applied gold leaf finish and gives the piece superb visual depth.
